Therapy is one of the most versatile and necessary treatment options for addiction, substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders. For this reason, River Oaks offers a number of therapies at our facility in both individual and group settings, and ranging from traditional to holistic.
Therapy That’s Right for You
River Oaks provides individualized treatment plans that speak to each client’s addiction, co-occurring mental health issues, and medical conditions. Treating the whole person doesn’t mean using all of the therapies we offer, just those that fit your needs.
Treating the whole person doesn’t mean using all of the therapies we offer, just those that fit your needs.
By performing a comprehensive assessment at admission, our team gathers detailed information on your addiction history, co-occurring mental health disorders, and ongoing medical issues to ensure we provide the addiction therapy types that appropriately address your needs. Once we tailor your treatment plan to fit your clinical needs, we periodically evaluate its effectiveness to make sure we’re still on track with your treatment goals.
Our therapies are offered in individual and group formats. Individual therapy takes place weekly, with the client’s primary therapist. It focuses on developing a treatment plan, creating recovery goals, and dealing with co-occurring disorders. In group therapy, patients will be encouraged to discuss their feelings and experiences with other individuals going through similar ones.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): This commonly used therapy type helps prevent patients from relapsing back to substance abuse by teaching them strategies to take control over their problematic thoughts and behaviors.
Motivational interviewing (MI): This therapeutic approach helps clients learn the importance of change and creates motivation for change where it didn’t exist before.
Family therapy: Family therapy allows the loved ones of a client to work through their feelings together in order to minimize enabling and strengthen relationships.
Recreational and Holistic Therapies
During your time at River Oaks, you may be able to participate in some or all of the following:
Recovery-oriented challenge therapy (ROCT): ROCT allows a therapist to observe and directly engage with clients during an activity, such as outdoor games and skill-building exercises.
Expressive arts and music therapy: This therapy uses art and music to allow clients to express themselves more easily than through talk therapy.
Equine therapy: Equine therapy, or EAGALA, utilizes horses as a tool to help clients improve feelings of self-confidence, self-efficacy, impulse control, and communication.
Wellness groups: Wellness groups focus on the overall wellness of the individual and on creating better habits to prevent relapse.
Skills-building: Skills-building also focuses on building better habits, most of which are associated with emotional and mental behaviors.
Medication-assisted therapy (MAT): Though not appropriate for all patients, MAT provides steady medication to minimize cravings, stabilize symptoms, and allow for easier reflection and therapeutic work.
In addition to traditional and holistic therapy options, clients may also attend 12-step meetings several times weekly.
River Oaks offers on-site 12-step meetings for both Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and off-site 12-step meetings are also available 3 times a week for clients who are ready to make trips outside facility grounds.
