5 Podcasts to Help Focus on Mental Health and Recovery

Recovery is a lifelong process full of both obstacles and accomplishments. Because life is always evolving, each milestone met on your path may also bring new challenges. That is why relapse is often a part of recovery. You may experience cravings or urges long after leaving treatment, so it’s important to have access to resources that can help support your sobriety. In some cases, just listening to others’ addiction recovery stories from the comfort of your own home is helpful. This is possible through podcasts which are talk-radio episodes available online.

Many individuals in recovery from an alcohol or drug addiction host podcasts to document their journey. These hosts may also share tips or advice about remaining sober and share their own personal stories. In this guide, we’ll discuss five great podcasts you’ll want to listen to during your recovery.

The Bubble Hour

The Bubble Hour is a weekly podcast hosted by author and blogger Jean McCarthy, who originally joined the podcast in 2013 as a co-host and took it over in 2016. She’s discussed her own journey to recovery on the podcast since first becoming sober in 2011 and works hard to produce content for individuals recovering from alcoholism everywhere around the world. She also runs UnPickled, a web blog that also focuses on recovery content. Every week, Jean invites a new guest to the show to discuss topics related to recovery and healthy lifestyles.

Since its creation, the podcast has garnered broad support from other individuals recovering from alcohol addiction, alongside tens of thousands of downloads. You’ll find hundreds of episodes specifically archived which include tips from guests on how to best maintain sobriety.

The Addicted Mind Podcast

The Addicted Mind Podcast focuses on exploring the effects of addiction and learning more information about why it happens. It also prioritizes creating a supportive environment for those struggling with an addiction. Host Duane Osterlind struggled with addiction from a young age and eventually went to inpatient rehab for his drug and alcohol addiction. The experience had a profound impact on his life, which he now carries into his current podcast work.

The Addicted Mind looks at what causes addictions and explores the latest innovative trends in treatment and recovery options. It takes a science-based approach to dive into all aspects of addiction, including how to heal the trauma that can lead to a substance use disorder and how families can help in the recovery process. Duane Osterlind also offers a mindfulness course based on positive psychology, which focuses on helping people in recovery become more self-aware and present.

That Sober Guy Podcast

Shane Ramer’s That Sober Guy Podcast is another great recovery podcast for individuals struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. Shane interviews both special celebrity guests and members of the community from all walks of life who have dealt with the effects of these disorders. He also offers a unique video course to help people navigate their first 90 days of sobriety effectively and prevent them from having a potential relapse. His course includes daily tools for staying sober, advice for having fun without alcohol, and tips for more effective problem-solving.

Shane Ramer originally created “That Sober Guy” to give others a way to share their own experiences after coming out of treatment for his 17-year drug and alcohol addiction. Since then, the podcast has grown to focus on mental health and how to stay sober while out on the town. Besides the podcast and his courses, he also hosts workshops to help men make connections and aid one another in their recovery.

The One Day At A Time Recovery (ODAAT) Podcast

The ODAAT Podcast focuses on recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and sharing tools for remaining sober. The podcast uses various inspirational stories to encourage listeners to continue their journey to recovery. Host Arlina Allen is in recovery from a substance use disorder and has been sober since April 23, 1994. She recognizes how important recovery is and uses the ODAAT podcast to pass on what she’s learned over her many years of sobriety in a compassionate, empowering way.

Arlina Allen bookmarks the most notable episodes, making them easy to rewatch for additional inspiration. Alongside the podcast, she also offers a free sobriety checklist and a newsletter with useful tricks and tips for staying sober.

The Addiction Podcast–Point of No Return

The Addiction Podcast shares recovery stories for individuals, family members, friends, or close associates affected by addiction. Every episode focuses on a different guest who has experienced addiction at some point in their life or helped a loved one through addiction. The show details the trauma that addiction disorders can bring to families and their communities, while also offering viable solutions to individuals looking to remain sober.

Guests also include law enforcement, doctors, advocates, individuals in academia, sports figures, and authors. The podcast includes a wide variety of addiction-related topics in addition to success stories, including updates to addiction programs, new therapies, and alternative or holistic approaches to detox. You can also find tips for how to continue to live a clean, healthy life.
