What to Look for in a Tampa Bay Detox or Rehab Over the Holidays

Choosing a detox or rehab is hard at any time of year. Over the holidays, it comes with extra pressure: time off work, family expectations, travel, and the sense that you should wait for a better moment. This checklist walks you through what to look for in a Tampa Bay program, what to ask, and how River Oaks Treatment Center in Riverview answers each point, so you can compare us with any other program you’re considering. If your biggest worry is getting through the holiday itself, our guide to avoiding relapse on Thanksgiving may help in the meantime.

1. Check That the Program Is Licensed in Florida

In Florida, substance abuse treatment providers must be licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) under Chapter 397 of the Florida Statutes. A license applies to specific services at a specific location, so ask to see it and check that it covers the level of care and the address you’re considering. You can also confirm a license with DCF.

River Oaks is licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

2. Look for Independent Accreditation

Accreditation means an outside organization has reviewed a program against national standards. Florida requires accreditation for clinical treatment services, so a program that can’t name its accrediting body deserves more questions. Also ask who the physicians are and what their credentials are.

River Oaks holds Behavioral Health Care Accreditation from The Joint Commission, and our clinical team includes four board-certified addiction medicine physicians. Read more about our accreditations and memberships.

3. Make Sure the Medical Team Matches Your Needs

Ask who assesses you when you arrive, who decides which level of care you need, and who monitors you if you need detox. Withdrawal from alcohol and some other substances can be dangerous, so don’t try to wait it out at home to avoid disrupting the holidays.

At River Oaks, registered nurses handle intake and complete a nursing assessment and a brief mental health assessment when you arrive. They work with an on-call physician to decide the right level of care, because not everyone needs to start in detox. Learn more about our medical detox program.

4. Ask About Mental Health, Not Just Substance Use

The holidays can stir up depression, anxiety, grief, and family stress, and mental health conditions and substance use often go together. Ask whether the program evaluates for co-occurring conditions and how it treats them.

At River Oaks, every patient receives a psychiatric evaluation from a licensed therapist within 48 hours of arrival, and your treatment plan is built from it.

5. Ask About Medications

Medications can ease cravings and withdrawal for some people. Ask whether the program offers them, who decides when they’re appropriate, and whether counseling is part of the plan.

At River Oaks, we use addiction treatment medications when our medical team determines they’re appropriate. These include naltrexone (Vivitrol), Suboxone, and others.

6. Look at the Whole Path, Not Just the First Week

Detox is a first step, not a full treatment. Ask what happens next, how long people typically stay, and what the plan looks like when you leave. Longer treatment is linked to better chances of long-term recovery, so a program that only offers a short stay may not be enough on its own.

River Oaks offers a full range of care, including medical detox, inpatient residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs. Our case management team builds a detailed, step-down aftercare plan with every patient. See all of our levels of care and our aftercare program.

7. Get Clear on Cost and Insurance

Ask whether the program is in-network or out-of-network with your plan, what your plan covers, and what you’ll owe. Also ask your insurer how much of your deductible you’ve met this year and when your plan year resets. For many plans the reset is January 1, but not every plan follows the calendar year. If you’ve already met much of your deductible, care before the reset may cost you less, but that isn’t true for everyone. Cost should be part of your decision, not the whole of it.

River Oaks accepts insurance as an out-of-network provider and is TRICARE certified, accepting TRICARE Select and TRICARE Prime for family members of service members. We also accept private pay and offer financing. You can for free, or read about insurance and payment options. If you work, our case management team can help you contact your employer about FMLA, a leave of absence, and other options.

8. Understand the Rules on Phones, Visitors, Family, and Privacy

These rules shape your stay, especially over the holidays, so ask about them before you commit: when can I use my phone, when can family visit, how do my loved ones get updates, and who can see my information?

At River Oaks, patients can use their phones during assigned times outside groups, and the time increases as they progress. Patients without a device can use a landline during the same times. Family visitation is offered on weekends, and times are listed on each patient’s program schedule. We offer a weekly educational family program and family and couples therapy, in person or virtual. Your treatment is confidential under HIPAA and 42 CFR, and we share information only with the loved ones you name on a signed release of information. Read our phone and electronics policy and our guide for families.

9. Plan the Logistics Around the Holidays

Ask how admission works if you’re calling on a holiday week, how arrival is handled, and what you should pack. In Tampa Bay, it also helps to ask about the program’s storm plan, since the Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30.

River Oaks is in Riverview, in Hillsborough County, about 25 miles and a 45-minute drive from Tampa International Airport. Same-day admissions are available, and we arrange complimentary transportation to our facility from the airport and from nearby bus and rail stations. Our admissions navigators can often find you a flight into Tampa. We recommend bringing two weeks of comfortable clothing, workout clothes, alcohol-free hygiene items, a photo ID, your insurance cards, and a list of your current medications. See what to expect and our admissions FAQ.

10. Watch for Red Flags

A good program answers your questions directly and doesn’t rush you. Be careful with any program or referral service that:

  • Promises a cure or guarantees results without assessing you first.
  • Can’t show you a license or name its accrediting body.
  • Offers perks such as free travel or rent to get you to choose a program. Florida’s patient brokering law bars offering or accepting commissions, bonuses, or kickbacks to induce patient referrals.
  • Won’t tell you who pays it, or steers you to one facility without asking about your needs.
  • Pressures you to decide before you’ve verified your insurance or understood the costs.
