Celebrate International Beer Day With N/A Beer

August 2 is International Beer Day. Hailed as a day to “rejoice in the greatness of beer,” this annual drinking fest arrives on the first Friday of every August and is celebrated in more than 200 cities around the world.

But for people struggling with alcohol addiction or in recovery from alcohol use disorder, so-called holidays like this can be tough and triggering.

But the good news is that nonalcoholic beer is having a moment. It’s become one of the fastest-growing beverage categories in the industry, accounting for nearly 2% of all beer sales in 2022. Since then, business has continued to boom, and data analysts predict the nonalcoholic beer and beverage industry will increase by another 31% in 2024.

Why? Experts point toward health-conscious millennials and Gen Zers, who are drinking less than the generations before them. Many of today’s teens and young adults say they are choosing to avoid alcohol thanks to more open discussions about mental health and a growing awareness of alcohol’s negative effects.

And the beer companies are taking note. Brewing giants like Heinekin, Budweiser, Guinness, and Samuel Adams have all recently made forays into the nonalcoholic beer game. In addition, the popular brand Athletic Brewing, which is often cited as the poster child for this movement, recently raised $50 million in funding, bringing its estimated net worth to $800 million.

So, this International Beer Day, those in recovery or those who simply opt not to drink alcohol can still “raise a toast to our brewers and bartenders” and revel in the celebrations.
