Levels of Care offered at River Oaks

Levels of Care

In our continuum of care, River Oaks offers four different levels of addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment. Levels of care differ in terms of the client’s medical need for supervision, support, and structure. During his or her program stay, depending on periodic clinical evaluation, the client may be assigned to a different level of care.

Our facility offers four levels of addiction treatment care:

  • Medical Detox
  • Residential Treatment (RT)
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Upon arrival at our facility, the client undergoes assessments to evaluate his or her addiction history, co-occurring mental health disorders, psychosocial history, and any ongoing medical issues. This evaluation determines the client’s appropriate level of care.

Medical Detox

The need for Medical Detox is determined at arrival during the client’s comprehensive medical and psychosocial evaluation. Along with the client’s substance use disorder, our team reviews any environmental or situational stressors that may influence treatment and recovery. While the client’s body adjusts to a decrease in substance levels, a higher level of medical supervision is prudent. Not every client requires medically supervised detox, and factors influencing the need for medical monitoring include the client’s drug of choice, current usage, length of abuse, severity of addiction, physical dependence, and anticipated withdrawal symptoms.

The Medical Detox level of care allows our licensed medical team to safely monitor 24/7 the client’s symptoms during the withdrawal period which usually lasts 5-7 days. The client resides in a quiet section within the residential area that is located in close proximity to the nurse’s station. All members of the medical team are experienced in wide-ranging withdrawal symptoms and understand the associated requirements. After the client safely completes detox and is evaluated by the interdisciplinary treatment team, he or she begins the appropriate course of treatment.

Residential Treatment (RT)

In our Residential Treatment (RT) program, the client resides at our facility and receives 24/7 staff supervision. The client participates in his or her treatment plan of individual therapy, group sessions, addiction therapy groups, and other therapeutic activities.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The client’s therapy schedule at the PHP level of care is highly structured, requiring the client’s attendance 3-7 days per week in blocks of treatment that are a minimum of 6-8 hours in length. Sessions include aftercare planning, individual sessions, case management, and group classes. Our PHP program helps clients move toward “real-life” experience phase of newly found recovery. PHP clients begin building a network of outside addiction support groups, experiential therapeutic activities, and sober recreation outings. Whether clients reside in the Tampa area or in another city, making these contacts during treatment will be helpful in early recovery following discharge.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

In our IOP program, the client requires less supervision than the PHP program but makes the commitment to participate in a structured treatment schedule. The IOP client attends therapy and programming 3-7 days per week, according to the individualized treatment plan. Therapy is provided in treatment blocks of a minimum of 3 hours in duration. At this care level, the client works on fine-tuning his or her early recovery and aftercare plan and becomes involved with the local sober community.

Aftercare Planning

Before graduating from treatment, it’s important for the client to have his or her aftercare program in place. The reason River Oaks stresses the importance of aftercare plans from day one is that an effective aftercare plan can make or break the client’s chances for long-term sobriety, particularly in the initial period following graduation.

A comprehensive aftercare plan can be beneficial for all areas of the client’s life after treatment. During treatment the client can work with the clinical team to talk about the need for continued care after graduation. Is it necessary to check in with a psychiatrist or therapist periodically? If the therapist makes this recommendation, then local providers in the community can be set up prior to graduation. Gathering contacts and resources builds a strong foundation of recovery resources for reintegrating into a drug-free life.

We encourage our graduates to stay in touch with fellow Rivers Oaks alumni, participate in AAC Alumni activities, and attend 12-Step or other recovery support groups for fellowship.
